After the town of Lushoto we continue on dirt roads over the tops of the mountains. The Usambara Mountains are fairly unusual in East Africa with their natural regions still covered in tropical forests, which otherwise continentally remain primarily in Western Africa. Considered tremendously significant ecologically and a Biodiversity hotspot. There are many protected zones throughout the range, which are being expanded and contributed to by the Tanzanian government.

Day 5 - Mambo - Lushoto-Usambara Mountains. Estimated 150 km. of winding dirt road.

On most mornings you wake up in Mambo and see the clouds under you. Later on the day the clouds disappear and there is a chance of seeing Mount Kilimanjaro although it’s 200 km. far away. Today is long and winding dirt-road over the tops of the Usambara Mountains. Farmers work on steep slopes. Rainfall in the mountains is sufficient and the soil is fertile. The landscape is breathtaking. Colorful dressed ladies walking to and from the markets. Villages hanging on the hills and great views. Some protected forests with beautiful tree-ferns. And a lot of agriculture.

Day 6 Lushoto - Moshi 280 km. of which gravel 100 km.

On the way to Kilimanjaro. After 70 km of asphalt we take 100 km. beautiful dirt road behind the Pare mountains.

Today round the Kilimanjaro the 5895 meter high ‘Kili’ always to our right. Another 100 kilometers of asphalt and then off-road driving in the dry savannah where Maasai let their cows eat the last grass. On the north side, the landscape is slowly changing into grain fields and large fields. You continue to climb and you arrive in pine forests at an altitude of 2100 meters. When the road has become asphalt again we arrive at the border with Kenya where we return to Kenya.  Even better views of the Kilimanjaro here on the Kenya side.

Day 8 - Amboseli - safari Amboseli National Park - Rest day

This day is reserved for an optional visit to Amboseli National Park. That means getting up early because the Kilimanjaro and the wildlife are best seen in the early morning. First a tough, long road past farms that benefit from the melting water of Kilimanjaro. African lunch with mama Chale.

If boats are available we take a boat-ride on the beautiful lake in the afternoon.

Day 10 Lake Jipe - Taita Hills

Take an early morning walk to see the sun coming up over the lake. The early-morning light is amazing. After breakfast we leave on the same road heading west now. We reach the new asphalt from the Voi-Taveta highway which runs straight through the Tsavo National Park. It is possible to spot elephants next to the highway. We leave the highway and enter the Taita Hills following narrow roads from village to village. Leaving the hot plains temperatures go down as we reach higher altitudes. Our hotel for the night has a good view, cold beers and local food.

Day 11 Taita Hills - Sagala in Tsavo 100 km. of which dirt road 70 km.

We leave the hills and have good views to the sisal plantations of Mwatate. We go down to the plains with large sisal-plantations changing to bush after the electric fence. We continue into the bush and after a long ride spend the night in Sagala-Lodge. Friendly environment,  a swimming pool and nice houses.

Day 12 - Sagala in Tsavo - Mombasa city 160 km. of which (in good weather) dirt road 85 km.

We take a moment to let the wilderness impress us and then leave for Mombasa. First 40 km. the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. We branch into a real African dirt-road; red soil, blue skies, cows on the 85 km. long road and a burning sun.

A wonderful off-road experience. Lunch at a petrol station on the Mombasa Highway.

In Mombasa new roads are being worked on, but we have to push ourselves through narrow, dusty routes.

In the hot, busy city we stay in a hotel with AC in a quiet place near "Old Town" the old city of Mombasa.

In the evening there is a great choice in restaurants although a few serve alcohol.
